4-H

4H is an informal, practical educational program for youth. It is the youth development program of Florida Cooperative Extension, a part of the University of Florida IFAS. 4H is where there's fun in learning and learning in fun!

The Florida Cooperative Extension 4H Youth Development program uses a learn-by-doing approach to enable youth to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to become competent, caring, and contributing citizens of the world. This mission is accomplished by using the knowledge and resources of the land grant university system, along with the involvement of caring adults. 4H is for all ages from 5 to 18, and carries only a nominal program fee for joining of just $10. For more information on the structure, function, and history of 4H, please refer to the Florida 4H website or ask your 4H Agents.

We go to 4-H shows and other area shows and have a great time. This is very family-oriented. To register for 4-H, the meeting is usually held at the Agricultural center on Lake Drive in Cocoa in September. 4-H is opened to all children until they are 18. You are allowed to compete when you are 8 years old by the September of that year.

4-H offers clinics, horse shows and field trips. The children give a demonstration of something about horses and they can hold an office. There is an end of the year banquet. The first year out the children are in walk trot classes. These are children in their first year of showing. After that they move up to the next division.

In 2011, Kayla Mckeon, age 12, won 1st place in Young Authors' "Quality Literature for 6th grade" category at Challenger 7. Kayla will be entering this writing in the 4H District Horse Show the end of April. At the Brevard County Fair, Kayla won two 1st place prizes for her project, "What Type Of Horse Has a Higher Heart Rate?". She also took a 1st place and two 4th place prizes for photography. Makayla Green won 2nd place and three white ribbon awards for her project, "The Markings of a Horse," at the 2011 Brevard County Fair.
